I haven't been to a drag show since the last century - 1980's. Back then, the performers looked like women you'd see at an elegant cocktail party or someone you would see walking down the red carpet at the Oscars. More reality based.

Can anyone summarize what has happened to the drag aesthetic since then? Why does all drag these days look like a cross between a clown and a luchador mask? How did it become a type of woman you'd never see - anywhere? It comes off as trying to scare people with the exaggerated makeup. Why did excess replace elegance?
