After celebrating her election as Mexico's first woman president, the CDMX Mayor and protégé of president Amlo will need to fix a massive water crisis. Hector Vivas / GETTY

1

A leftist Jewish woman is the President of Mexico. And we're a coin flip away from electing a white Nationalist to the same office. I hope the border remains open if Trump wins.

2

Anything else notable about the new Mexican president?

3

How can you ignore the cruise ship passengers "stranded" in Elliott Bay because of the winds? Oh, the humanity!

4

Republicans are pitiful shitbags betraying themselves to prop up an empty suit stained with spray tan.

6

Mexico elects a young, progressive woman leader.
Finland elected a young, progressive woman leader.
New Zealand elected a young, progressive woman leader.
United States elects……

7

Why are we stuck with the choice between a felon or a barely animated corpse? Give Kamala a chance...

8

@6 Maybe by American standards, but I advise you look up a little about the new president of Mexico, as a 61 year old woman would be a very generous definition of "young".

Gardi Sugdub (aka Carti Subtupu) is a dot on the map off the N coast of Panama, maybe 1000' x 500'. It and mulitple adjacent islets are entirely covered in tin-roofed shacks. It was barely tenable before sea level rise.

11

@5: Interesting, this Slog AM post also mentions the evacuation of Gardi Sugdub, a Panamanian island with an elevation of one-half to one meter, which is effectively sinking out of sight, as climate change pushes ocean levels higher.

The Maldives average 1.5m above sea level, so the banishment of Israelis from there merely means there won’t be any Israeli citizens to evacuate when the Maldives finally slip beneath the waves.

12

So is the same Maldives government that shelters Russian billionaires?

https://www.reutersagency.com/en/reutersbest/article/reuters-reveals-maldives-shelters-sanctioned-russian-billionaires-yachts/

Maldives banning Israelis has everything to do with religion, little to do with taking an anti-war stance. FYI, Islam is the official religion of the Maldives and open practice of any other religion is forbidden; oh and non-Muslims are prohibited from becoming citizens (are Progressives sure this is the government you want to champion?).

13

@12: “ are Progressives sure this is the government you want to champion?”

Yes, because Horseshoe Theory.

14

@8 Fair enough, but
It’s not just ancient Biden vs Orange Jesus- It’s also
Grassley, McConnell, Feinstein(RIP), Waters, Bernie, Risch, Cardin, Rogers, Napolitano, Hoyer, Pelosi, Clyburn, Davis, Carter, Wilson, Eshoo, Granger, and other 80 year old Congresspersons I failed to mention. Small wonder the Senate (and to a lesser extent the House) has been called a nursing home.
There are many octogenarians I don’t know crap (or more accurately Crapo) about , but they are there in Congress doing whatever to us.

15

Are the progressives championing the Maldives in the room with us right now?

16

I'm so tired of this "Biden is old" nonsense the hipsters keep yapping about. Lots of people are old. Most of us will end up old, and if I make it to his age I hope I'll be half as with it as President Biden.

As for the snowpack, I was going across Snolquamie yesterday and was surprised to see how much snow is still in the upper Cascades. Same is true of Stevens pass. But Lake Keechelus is quite low already.

17

Biden and Trump merely anchor their cabinet and party to power. Biden's team has brought relative stability to the chaotic Trump years which ended in an out of control global pandemic which hospitalized him at Walter Reed. Either you vote for the cabinet of competent technocrats or you vote in a bunch of loyalist fascist criminals who are willing to betray their country, the Constitution, sell out our national secrets to the highest bidder, and kill their neighbors to avoid accountability for Trump. The choice is pretty clear if you have clear eyes. Woooooooooow.

18

I'm a Progressive and I don't think the Maldives should ban Israelis over Gaza, seems like collective punishment. But Netanyahu and his cabinet need to be held accountable for their war crimes against humanity and there must be a ceasefire. The crook is around their necks and they'll be pulled offstage summarily.

19

Republicans are threatening violence because they are weak and afraid and think their guns will save them from justice.

20

@2
"Known as “la Doctora” for her glittering academic credentials, Claudia Sheinbaum is a physicist with a doctorate in energy engineering, the former mayor of one of the world’s most populous cities, and was part of the United Nations panel of climate scientists that received a Nobel Peace Prize. "

If Trump were elected, the comparison would be quite embarrassing. We wouldn't hear the end of it from Mexicans.

21

@17 it's not so clear for those who are hurting economically (~70% live from paycheck to paycheck) because Biden and Democrats keep telling them the economy is great and they should be happy for it.

23

@5 Assuming you're Jewish (which I think is a fairly reasonable assumption, given your obvious enthusiasm for Israel) and not elderly or disabled, have you considered making aliyah and joining the IDF? Last fall I honestly half-expected there would be a massive wave of diasporans eager to drop everything and come to Israel's aid in its darkest hour since its founding -- sort of a Lincoln Brigade, if you will. But for some reason that doesn't seem to be happening. Any idea as to why?

24

@22 For this election perhaps because Republicans are opportunistic and don't really care about the little guy being able to afford groceries, but if the incumbent was Republican, they certainly wouldn't want folks to think about grocery bills.

26

Admittedly, in the "Biden acts like Trump" counter-factual, we'd probably still be in the "railing against insufficiently loyal bureaucrats" phase of Hunter's "persecution". Still, it's probably worth remembering "at least 84 out of 94 Trump pardons had a personal or political connection to the president."

@25 Nice word salad but violence didn't start on October 7:

From Doctors without Borders
"Even before Hamas’ attack on October 7, Israeli forces had already killed 205 Palestinians in the West Bank this year, while settlers were responsible for nine more killings. Of these deaths, 52 occurred in Jenin alone, including in its refugee camp, where Palestinians who’ve searched for safety amid conflict and violence over the years live.

On June 19, Israeli forces began conducting air strikes in the West Bank—something that had not occurred since the Second Intifada in the early 2000s. Far from being an isolated event, these attacks have become more frequent. In July, Israeli fighter jets dropped bombs and drone strikes on the densely populated Jenin refugee camp during a 48-hour military operation. The violence has only escalated since."

@25 and as discussed previously, indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks on civilians are war crimes according to UN experts

29

@12,

Are you gonna answer @15 and confirm who here is championing the Maldives government? Don't worry about it and I'll save you the trouble, as you're the only one drawing any sort of comparison whatsoever.

I would appreciate if you'd address one other tangentially related question though. Is your username an allusion to the Buddhist religion, with it's emphasis on serene acceptance and dignified humility? Because your commentary here seems to be laced with a shitload lot of smug and arrogant condescension. Just my $0.02 of course, and I don't claim to be an adherent to the religion, though I do strive (with varying degrees of failure & success, of course) to conform to it's basic tenets. I've lately been trying to do better, though certain commenters bring out the worst in me.

Biden
Suggests
Israeli Prime Minister
Is Prolonging War to Stay in Power

Asked if Benjamin Netanyahu was prolonging the war, President Biden said he believed “there is every reason for people to draw that conclusion.”

Both in Jerusalem and Washington, Mr. Netanyahu is widely seen as highly aware that an end to the conflict could easily result in his being swept from office — especially once investigations began into how Israel ignored evidence of the Oct. 7 terror attack that killed nearly 1,200 Israelis, and how slowly Israel’s defense forces responded.

Street protests against him have begun to gather momentum again, seven months after the attack.

@29: “Are you gonna answer @15 and confirm who here is championing the Maldives government?”

Um, the Stranger, who noted the anti-Israeli-tourist part, without noting the haven-for-Russian-kleptocrats part?

“I've lately been trying to do better, though certain commenters bring out the worst in me.”

Is someone forcing you to spend your time here?

@23: “…making aliyah and joining the IDF? Last fall I honestly half-expected there would be a massive wave of diasporans eager to drop everything and come to Israel's aid in its darkest hour since its founding -- sort of a Lincoln Brigade, if you will. But for some reason that doesn't seem to be happening. Any idea as to why?”

Has anyone in authority over the IDF asked for volunteers from the diaspora? How long would it take to assemble and train such a force? Would it be integrated into the IDF, or remain an auxiliary?

Also, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade was just one intervener in the Spanish Civil War; on the other side, the Luftwaffe also fought. (Veterans of which were later called “Spaniards” back home in Germany.)

For we Americans, Jewish or otherwise, our federal law and policy require our country to help maintain Israel’s “qualitative military edge” in the region, so we already gave at the tax office. That would seem to be a more valuable contribution than attempted soldiery in a faraway land.
