Again: Pike STREET is east of 1st. Pike PLACE is west of 1st. Pike PLACE Market.
Pike STREET has been closed (by concrete planters that are not part of the street redesign) between 1st & 2nd for a year plus, but it's always been the domain of a flock of shitting, stupid, kickable pigeons. The Health Dept should ban the crazy fucks who feed them. SOPA: Stay Out of Pigeon Areas.
Don't worry @1. Give their on-the-spot Trans/Queer journalist Viv, a minute or two. She is still too busy writing sad trombone orchestrations about child sex change operations being put on hold.
That business owner's shop has been closed for renovations for some time. So I legit didn't know she reopened. But it's easy to say business is down on day one when you've been closed for some time beforehand
Anyone driving through the market who isn't a vendor or an emergency vehicle is either an a-hole or a lost, clueless idiot. I stand by my highly controversial hot-take.
I remember seeing a tour bus go through the market only to bottom out as it attempted to go up Virginia street to 1st. All passengers had to get out and it was quite a mess.
I kinda like the pigeons! Couple years ago I was walking my dog one morning and let her chase off a couple that were huddled on the sidewalk eating some trash or whatever. They scattered and right I was picking up the dog's leash to keep walking one of them divebombed me from behind and smacked me in the head hard enough to knock my hat off. I gotta figure the fucker was not only smart enough to recognize my role in letting the dog give chase, but also pissed off enough to give me shit as I was leaving. I gotta respect that and have always been a bit more cautious in their presence ever since.

The birds are the eyes of Seattle.... Always watching you wakowski!!!! I befriended a crow by breaking open some nuts it was having some difficulty with. The next day it met me by my car and gave me the coolest crow song I had ever heard. I hadn't known crows could make such beautiful song. I knew they were smart, I suggest being friends with them.
It's a pretty ominous sign that we're economically fucked when the corrupt billionaire CEO$ are now telling Elon Mu$k's Mein Trumpf that he's WRONG. Gee, and after only three months back in the Oval Outhouse!
Charles, I'm surprised you haven't moved to Alaska, already. Let's be grateful for sunny days of 70 degrees Fahrenheit outdoor temperatures, and pleasant breezes off the water here in the PNW while we've got them. What I'm concerned about are looming triple digit temps and smog from wildfire smoke.
Someone should have suggested conducting a survey of Pike Place Market shoppers. Starting prior to this road closure, for a baseline number. "What mode of transportation did you use to the market? How much did you spend?"
To be fair, one should have been conducted of the people just wandering around as well. But I'm not certain how one would log a response of a subject just standing there silently, pissing themselves.

The business owner complaining owns a frozen yogurt shop in the Sanitary Market building. It’s in a largely less trafficked area outside of when it’s fucking hot out and people go inside to get out of the sun and get frozen yogurt and when the Filipino place is open. There is absolutely no way that cars driving down the street, with her store near the opening of pike place, and the very limited parking effect her business whatsoever.
@19 Buddhamat: I'm just curious---were you born during the fall or winter months (Charles has a February birthday)? PersonalIy, find pitch darkness by 4 pm outside and bitter cold depressing as hell. I'm a Seattle native, have a midsummer birthday, and feel a tremendous relief when spring returns with more hours of daylight. Vitamin D-3, come and get us!
@20 kristofarian: Yep. For those who want dark and consistently wet, Forks is the place to go.
They don't call it the Rain Capitol of the PNW for nothin'.
Google maps shows the small stretch from the pig to 1st (i.e. the part going in front of Left Bank Books) is still Pike STREET. Where are you getting that that stretch is officially part of Pike PLACE (which feels parallel to 1st)?
Wisconsin governor statement after arrest of Milwaukee judge: a move by Trump to 'undermine our judiciary'
Wisconsin’s governor Tony Evers released the following statement regarding the arrest of Milwaukee county judge Hannah Dugan:
"In this country, people who are suspected of criminal wrongdoing are innocent until their guilt is proven beyond reasonable doubt and they are found guilty by a jury of their peers—this is the fundamental demand of justice in America.
Unfortunately, we have seen in recent months the president and the Trump Administration repeatedly use dangerous rhetoric to attack and attempt to undermine our judiciary at every level, including flat-out disobeying the highest court in the land and threatening to impeach and remove judges who do not rule in their favor.
I have deep respect for the rule of law, our nation’s judiciary, the importance of judges making decisions impartially without fear or favor, and the efforts of law enforcement to hold people accountable if they commit a crime. I will continue to put my faith in our justice system as this situation plays out in the court of law."
Once we see empty shelves (and I side with Charles on this) Trump will blame the retailers or some conspiracy theory. It'll be a dagger in his side. I also agree with Charles on 70 degrees being almost too hot unless you're on the water.
I won't be satisfied until I see Trump roasted alive over flames, and his flesh force-fed to his family and traitor-collaborators, televised during the Superbowl halftime entertainment. The ratings will be incredible; like nothing we've ever seen before!
@6: A-hole here. I've driven through many times. My truck will crawl in low range at a much lower speed than pedestrians. So if there's a collision, it'll be somebody walking into the back of me. All I have to worry about are the stumble-bums with no situational awareness.
But the proposed car ban really won't help. It seems that both the Vancouver BC and Bourbon Street incidents involved a driver purposefully evading blockades. Sure, you can block the street with dump trucks or concrete blocks. But not Pike Place, if you expect to allow delivery vehicles and handicapped placarded vehicles. This will lead the walkers to believe that the street is pedestrian friendly and will just create targets. The plywood signs will stop nobody if the drivers are determined.
You could do as Amsterdam does. A pedestrian mall (Nieuwendijk) is open for trucks at night. But closed off by mechanical bollards during the day (when shoppers are out). But the equimpent would be expensive and a tough sell for market vendors and the handicapped.

You will be eating the pigeons soon if Trump keeps up his idiocy. In Bellevue, they'll call it squab, with capers.
