    Bad news: The World Health Organization estimates antimicrobial resistance will cause 10 million deaths worldwide by 2050 if no effective interventions are made. Better news: Washington State University Global Animal Health researcher Dr. Sylvia Omulo has spent the last six years deep-diving into disease prevention solutions for low- and middle-income countries. She'll share her findings and divulge remaining challenges in this talk. 

  5. Azra Raza with LeRoy Hood: The Human Costs of Cancer
    Oncologist Azra Raza, a professor of medicine at Columbia University and the co-editor of 3QuarksDaily.com, argues that we have "lost the war on cancer" in her new book, The First Cell, which is in part informed by her own experience as her husband's oncologist as he succumbed to leukemia. Join the author in conversation with LeRoy Hood of the Institute for Systems Biology.

    In his new book, social critic Curtis White outlines a reimagined counterculture—one less bound to a 1960s model—that he believes will yield "a world we actually want to live in."

    This sobering panel led by Mort Kondracke will examine attacks on democracy all over the world. Hear from former congressman Slade Gorton, conservative author, historian, and editor Robert Merry, journalist and Silicon Valley historian Margaret O'Mara, former Democratic politico Ted Van Dyk, and Russian and Asian studies professor Daniel Chirot.

    If you're feeling guilty about the last house plant you accidentally let die, take comfort in the fact that many leafy things can defend themselves in times of environmental imbalance (e.g. too much water, not enough sun, etc.) and that plants are the dominant land-dwelling organisms. Resident botanist Orlande de Lange has the full scoop.

  48. The Brothers Paranormal
    This black comedy by Prince Gomolvilas, staged here for its rolling world premiere by Pork Filled Productions, concerns a pair of Thai American brothers who see a market opportunity in a surge of "Asian-looking" apparitions throughout the nation. Pork Filled says: "The Brothers Paranormal uses standard horror tropes (it's a ghost story! On Halloween!) to do a deep dive on issues affecting marginalized communities: displacement (whether from natural disaster or gentrification), mental health (a hidden killer in the Asian American community) and handling grief and trauma (well...that's everyone)."

    Noveltease Theatre will sex up Jane Austen's 1803 novella Northanger Abbey—a satire of gothic romance—and pair it with campy material from 1960s pulp fiction novels for the ultimate high-low combination.

In this talk, journalist and author Daniel Brook will share insights from this crucial time in American history as outlined in his latest book, The Accident of Color.
